And they’re off!

I finally planted up some seeds yesterday. Of particular interest: Royal Chantenay carrots started in toilet paper rolls. The idea is the stick the whole thing in the ground when the time is right.

Here’s the full list:

  • Early White Vienna Kohlrabi
  • Long Harvest Broccoli
  • Broccoli Raab
  • Long Island Improved Brussels Sprout
  • Ruby Red Chard
  • Gourmet Beet Blend
  • Purple Top White Globe Turnip
  • German Chamomile
  • Bouquet Dill
  • Cilantro
  • Italian Parsley Gigante
  • Royal Chantenay Carrots

Sweet potatoes! I am trying to grow my own sweet potato slips. I think they are the right size to be slipped off. I just cut a sweet potato in half, stuck toothpicks near the bottom and submerged an inch or so of each half in a old peanut jar of water. From what I’ve been reading, sweet potatoes want a lot of heat, which we don’t get so much of is our LA winter. But we do get a substantial amount of water typically, which sweet potatoes like. We shall see how it goes. I am planning on putting them in the old potato towers.

Lemongrass rooting. Of note: the rooting didn’t happen until I wrapped the mason jar in a scarf. Roots are shy creatures apparently. These fellows are going in the future herb spiral revamp. Wait for it. It’s happening any day now. Any day.
